Aulus Vitellius, born A.D. 14, was a close friend of all the emperors from Tiberius to Nero. Galba chose him to command the legions in Lower Germany. The soldiers of Vitellius proclaimed him Emperor at Colonia Agrippinensis (now Cologne) on the 2nd of January, 69.
