T. Flavius Vespasianus was born in the Sabine country A.D. 9, son of Flavius Sabinus and Vespasia Polla. He commanded part of forces which invaded Britain under Claudius. His conduct of the Jewish war had raised his reputation, when the war broke out between Otho and Vitellius after the death of Galba. He was proclaimed Emperor at Alexandrea on the 1st of July, 69
