Flavius Popilius Magnentius was intrusted by Constans, after serving as a common soldier, the command of the Jovian and Herculian battalions. He availed himself of his position to organize a conspiracy against the weak and profligate Constans, who was put to death by his emissaries. Magnentius was acknowledged as Emperor in all the Western provinces except Illyria where Vetranio has assumed the purple. Constantius hurried from the frontier of Persia to crush the usurpers. Magnentius was defeated in the passes of the Cottian Alps and put an end to his own life in August, 353.
