Caracalla, son of Septimius Severus and his second wife Julia Domna, was born at Lyons A.D. 188. His legal name Marcus Aurelius Antoninus appears on coins. Carcalla was a nickname derived from a long tunic worn by Gauls, which he adopted as his favorite dress after he became Emperor. He married Plautilla in 202. In 211, on the death of Septimius Severus at York, Caracalla and his brother Geta succeeded to the throne.
